My grandparents, my uncle, and my father all came to the United States as immigrants. My father was born in a refugee camp in Italy during the aftermath of World War II and arrived in America when he was just nine months old. Nine years later, our family stood together and became naturalized U.S. citizens.

I grew up on that story — the waiting, the paperwork, the hope, and the quiet courage it takes to start over in a new country. It taught me that behind every immigration file is a family holding its breath.
